we May-d it!

We've ended the spring semester! Graduation happened! And then it snowed 6 inches! Our hours are shifting into summer gear (though the winter wonderland outside says otherwise), but we'll have a few residents and some more relaxed events happening in the upcoming weeks - - -

Kamari Carter was here!

Kamari was our third practitioner in residence from this year's cohort, and spent a couple weeks in April exploring the collection. He also gave a special in-studio appearance and performance of his audio art (with collaborator Gladstone Deluxe) on our beloved campus station Radio 1190 - listen to their archive of that on soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/radio1190/kamari-carter.

We have a new publication coming...

Last summer's visiting artist Jazmyn Crosby has finished a publication for the Other Networks series and we're so excited to release it into the world. We can't help teasing it a little bit, keep an eye out for more on that front. It's all about interspecies communication and it's beautiful. While you wait... if you didn't get a chance to hear it, listen to Bug Radio, the performance she did during her visit on Radio 1190.

CYBERDECKCLUB for summer

We're gonna try out some new affinity-group-style hangout times in the lab, and the first of those is CYBERDECKCLUB. Starting May 13 and repeating every Wednesday at 1pm til we say otherwise - bring your deck-in-progress, or your idea for one, and your lunch. Hang out in the lab with others interested in building bespoke computers and communications devices!

Some other little news bits from the lab:

  • Our main website (mediaarchaeologylab.com) is updateable again so we'll be adding events & things there again, but the calendar page on Neocities will stay because it's an easy way to gather calendars all into a single link. So - open house hours will be linked from as many places as possible! For the summer... those are pretty limited at this point. Let us know if you're interested in volunteering and helping to change that!
  • MAL managing director libi will be one of the repair-folk at the Denver Tool Library Repair Fair on May 17.
  • MAL PAL Andrew will be speaking at NaClCON (Salt Con) at the end of May https://naclcon.com/speakers, talking about running early hacking tools on obsolete computers.
  • Our next Practitioner in Residence is the artist collective Switcheristic Telecommunications, and they'll be doing some research into the history of the pop-up. Keep an eye out for events around their visit!

Finally, Fundraising!

Yes that's right, it's our biannual reminder that we have a support fund! Money in that fund goes directly to the lab and helps us to be able to do things like buy replacement parts for the Edison Disc Phonograph and give some financial backing to our Practitioners-in-Residence and student research projects. And we appreciate every bit of support we get from every single one of you!

That's all we have for now - happy May!
