Happy October!

it's MAL-o-ween season 🎃...

Hi folks! We're well into the fall now and so much is happening...

  1. Maya Buffet-Davis' exhibition Books Are Machines has an opening reception from 2-5 PM Saturday October 11 at the Bemis Public Library in Littleton. Maya is a MAL graduate student affiliate & artist in residence in the Media Before Media pop-up, and will be speaking about her work at 3pm.
  1. The Media Before Media pop-up exhibition continues in the CASE W250 space. This exhibition features an array of early to mid 20th century historical devices in audio, moving image, writing/printing and computation, including some early history of AI. We have hours pretty much every weekday - check the calendar and stop by if you can!
  2. It's fall fundraiser time! All U.S.-based donations over $7 will receive a thank you sticker pack (including our new limited-run heart shaped one, ooooo) and U.S.-based donations over $20 will also receive a limited-run print made with our newly refurbished mimeograph.

To donate, follow these two steps:
      1. Make your donation to either this paypal pool or through our donation portal.
      2. If you are donating an amount that gets you a thank you gift, email a screenshot of your receipt along with your mailing address to: mediaarchaeology+fallfund2025@colorado.edu

Other bits of news...

On September 9th, MAL Director Lori Emerson was grateful to see many of you present at her lecture-performance “Beyond the Internet Imaginary” that took place at the Boulder Public Library’s Canyon Theater. On Friday September 19th, Emerson also presented “Other Cybernetics for Other AIs” at the symposium Re-enacting Dartmouth hosted by the Institute for Experimental Media Archaeology in St. Pölten, Austria. Finally, on Monday September 22nd Emerson presented “How to Activate the Potential of Imaginary Networks” as part of the conference Archaeologies of Telematic Presence hosted by the Università Degli Studi Di Milano.

Lori and libi continue to make headway on a variety of hands-on projects including but not limited to:

  • Repairing the flyweight speed governor on our 1920s tabletop Victrola.
  • Getting our Webster Electric audio wire recorder running, which has been diagnosed as having a bad magnetic head (any suggestions? please feel free to share...)
  • Refurbishing and making prints with our 1940s Ditto spirit duplicator, which has included making our own spirit liquid and reconstructing the stencil making process using modern tattoo stencil supplies.
  • Learning how to set up an end-fed antenna for our vintage 20m CW-only radio and receiving... something? Now we just need to learn Morse code. Please enjoy this photo of libi and Lori and a different antenna 🎃

Thanks for reading, friends! more soon - MAL
